Matt La Von Jazz

  Jazz duet series at Mulan

31 year old saxophonist, Matt La Von, started his career as a professional musician in the city of Philadelphia at the age of 18. After relocating to New York City in January 2001, he established himself as a sideman, bandleader, and composer and has been seen in many well known jazz and live music venues throughout New York and the five boroughs. Such venues include the Blue Note, the Knitting Factory, Galapagos, the Lions Den, Puppets Jazz bar, Barbes, and the Tea Lounge. He has been regularly requested to perform for private functions and gala events by many of the most notable NYC institutions in such settings as The Museum of Modern art, Cipriani’s, The Plaza Hotel, The 4 Seasons, and The Marriot Marquis. Whatever the setting, venue, or occasion, Matt La Von brings a host of talented musicians who are dedicated to performing with an emphasis on creativity and artistry that combines the integrity of traditional jazz with the excitement of modern music. In his musical travels he has been compared to such famous saxophonists as Lee Konitz, Wayne Shorter, and Joe Henderson by audience members and fellow musicians alike.

In this series of jazz duets, Matt La Von features four of his favorite musicians that he has worked with throughout the last 13 years, including the very lyrical pianist and accompanyist extraordinaire, Broc Hempel, as well as three very different and outstanding jazz bass players; the melodious jazz bass stylings of John Lenis; CAP RECORDS and SPICE RACK RECORDS recording artist, Christian Fabian of the Lionel Hampton Big Band; and the always creative and explorative, Mike O’Brien.

On six occasions throughout the month of November, various combinations of these musicians will perform and interpret music from the abundant jazz repertoire. Below is a list of what you can look forward to.
